You should never write off champions: Hussey on Dhoni’s future

Dhoni and Hussey (TOI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Former Australia batsman Michael Hussey believes MS Dhoni is a champion cricketer and the ongoing forced break would provide him with an opportunity to introspect and see whether he wants to play again for the Indian team.
“I am obviously not an Indian selector but I don’t think you can discount MSD. You should never write off champions and champion players, and he has given so much to the country as a player and leader,” Hussey said during ‘HotSpot: The Cricket Podcast’ by Chetan Narula (sports journalist) and Deep Dasgupta (former Indian cricketer).
“He (Dhoni) still keeps himself in very good shape so as long as he keeps himself fit and healthy, and maybe this break is really helpful for him to rest and get a break especially from the physical side of things…because he has so much experience.
“It will take time to get his skills to the required level but not as long as other players who don’t know their game as well. He has a great understanding of his own game and the whole game in general. I am not worried from the skill perspective,” Hussey added.
Dhoni has been on a sabbatical since the 2019 World Cup where India lost to New Zealand in the semifinals under Virat Kohli’s leadership.
There has been a lot of talk whether the wicketkeeper batsman will return to the Indian team or not with the T20 World Cup, to be held later this year in Australia, now in doubt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The only question is it is upto MSD himself really. Whether he is willing to be physically and mentally fully engaged to play for the country at the international level, then I have no doubt he can still do it. But does he want to do it?” asked Hussey.
“Maybe this forced break for MSD will give him an opportunity to mentally refresh (in that regard) and get that hunger to want to do it again (for India). I am not writing him off no question whatsoever, but I think it is up to him, and in his mind, in his heart, whether he still wants to do it (at the international level),” he added.
Dhoni was scheduled to lead Chennai Super Kings in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League which currently stands indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Have come to realize now that I wasn’t ready for international cricket, admits Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer, who played 31 Tests for India between 2000 and 2008, has said that he now realizes that he was not quite ready to handle the rigours of international cricket when he was picked for the Indian side. Jaffer played his last international match in 2008, when he was just 30 years old.

After making his debut as an enthusiastic 22-year-old against South Africa in front of his home crowd, Mumbai, Wasim Jaffer did not enjoy the greatest of international careers. Despite eating the domestic circuit alive, Jaffer did not light up the international stage as many expected him to do and he ended his career having played just 31 Tests, with those appearances being split across eight years. Albeit scoring two double tons, Jaffer’s inconsistency and inability to grab his chances meant that his Indian career prematurely came to an end in 2008, at just the age of 30, despite him dominating the domestic scene years post that.

Reflecting back on his career, the 42-year-old, who has now retired and has taken up head coach duties for Uttarakhand, admitted that he has now come to the realization that he wasn’t quite ready for international cricket when he played for the Indian side.

“I was very nervous facing South Africa on debut without a doubt. I was young and immature, but I was proud of the moment. I felt very happy as my father wanted one of his sons to play for India. I was only informed around about an hour ago before the match that I was playing. Looking back, I feel I wasn’t ready for international cricket. I did well in patches and then I was dropped,” the veteran told CrickTracker in an interview.

Ranging from VVS Laxman to Shiv Sundar Das, the right-hander opened with a vast number of cricketers in his Test career, but the 42-year-old had no hesitation in picking Virender Sehwag as his favourite partner to bat alongside – even over the great Sachin Tendulkar.

“It has to be Virender Sehwag, purely because he was entertaining,” said Jaffer, when asked who his favourite batting partner was.

Despite playing first-class cricket till the age of 42, Jaffer spent the last few years of his career more as a father figure in the dressing room, nurturing and guiding youngsters in the sides he played in, and the 42-year-old spoke highly of both Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw, both of whom he believes can become great cricketers.

“Both are very talented. If Shaw keeps his head in the right space, he has miles to go. With the kind of game he possesses, he is a special talent. But he needs to maintain the balance. Even Gill has grabbed the chances with both hands and has gotten quality,” he said of Gill and Shaw.

Furthermore, Jaffer also stated that he considered Virat Kohli to be India’s greatest ever white-ball cricketer.

Sarfaraz should have been given more time as Pakistan captain: Inzamam

Home / Cricket / Sarfaraz should have been given more time as Pakistan captain: Inzamam

Former Pakistan captain and chairman of selectors Inzamam-ul-Haq said wicket-keeper batsman Sarfarz Ahmed should have been given a longer rope as Pakistan captain. Inzamam said Sarfaraz had brought many laurels to Pakistan and he was sacked when he was actually gaining experience as a leader.

“Sarfaraz achieved some notable victories for Pakistan and was learning to be a good captain but unfortunately when he had learnt from experience and mistakes he was removed as captain,” the former captain told a TV channel.

Inzamam remained chief selector from 2016 till the 2019 World Cup. During his tenure, most of the time Sarfaraz remained captain.

Soon after Inzamam was replaced by head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan Cricket Board removed Sarfaraz as a player and captain from all three formats.

“Sarfaraz won us the Champions Trophy and also made the team number one in T20 cricket. He got us some good wins. He should have been given more time as captain by the board but it acted in haste and didn’t give him confidence or patience.”

The PCB has now given the Test captaincy to senior batsman, Azhar Ali while young batsman Babar Azam leads the side in the white ball formats.

Inzamam, the most capped player for Pakistan, also said that the captain’s own performance can dip as he had to focus a lot on other players. “But a captain learns all this with time. There is no shortcut to it.”

He pointed out that people praise Imran Khan’s leadership qualities and captaincy but he also won the World Cup on his third attempt as captain.

“He won the 1992 World Cup because by that time he had become a seasoned captain and learnt to motivate his players and get them to fight in every match.”

Inzamam also said there was a sense of insecurity among Pakistan players during the 2019 World Cup. Inzamam said captains need to be backed since they get better with time.

“Even in the last World Cup I felt the captain and players were under pressure because they were thinking if we don’t do well in the tournament we will be out. That environment was created and this is not good for cricket,” Inzamam said.

Ishant Sharma opens up about his camaraderie with former Indian captain MS…

Ishant Sharma made his debut under the leadership of Rahul Dravid, but the heyday of his illustrious career coincided with MS Dhoni’ s ascent to the rank of Indian captaincy. The speedster has recently revealed the camaraderies he shares with the former captain MS Dhoni and admired his contribution towards developing the youngsters.

The Delhi-born fast-bowler opened up about how his relationship with Dhoni took a positive turn only after 2013.

On a show called Cricket Connected, Sharma said: “Initially, my interaction with MS Dhoni was limited, but after 2013, I started talking to him and understanding him.”

He also talked about Mohammed Shami, who used to spend most of the time with Dhoni in his room.

“Then I got to know how cool he is and how nicely he talks to the youngsters and treats them. He is same on the field, he has never asked us to not visit him in his room. You can ask (Mohammed) Shami, he goes to his room the most! He has always been like this, and it’s a different moment to enjoy with him when you can learn a lot of things from him, about cricket or life.”

Sharma is not the first bowler who spoke so highly of Dhoni and his mentorship quality. Nearly every youngsters who played under the leadership of Dhoni applaud the wicketkeeper-batsman for his immense and unparalleled contribution to the Indian cricket team.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Virat Kohli’s world records, which he created in the game across all formats are built on the substructure whose foundation was laid by none other but Dhoni.

Ishant is short of just three matches to reach the century of Test-match appearance for India. He, along with Jasprit Bumrah, will be leading the Indian pace battery when India visits Australia later this year to battle for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Showmax removing 7 titles from its platform after concluding review of racially insensitive content

Showmax mobile app. (Photo: Supplied/Showmax)

  • Showmax has completed its initial review of content on its platform that could be racially insensitive.
  • Seven titles, of which five are films by Leon Schuster, have been removed from the platform.
  • The local streaming service says it can’t tell people what is right or wrong but can make decisions on what content it hosts.
  • Leon Schuster says “there’s nothing” he can do about the decision except make a cinematic return with a “fantastic new film”.

South African streaming service Showmax on Friday released a statement confirming that they’ve conducted and completed an initial review of the content on their platform.

The purpose of the review was to identify racially insensitive content and to remove it from its offering.

The initial announcement that the streaming service was reviewing its content was met with both support and backlash online. Many felt the content did not offend them, while others praised Showmax for taking a definitive stand against blackface.

“We have completed an initial review of the content on Showmax. Seven titles have been removed due to negative racial stereotyping and prominent elements of blackface,” the South African streaming platform confirmed in the statement.

Of the six Leon Schuster movies that were under review, Frank & Fearless will be made available on Showmax again. The other films (You Must Be Joking, You Must Be Joking Too, Oh Schucks…It’s Schuster, Sweet ‘n Short, Schuks! Pay Back the Money) will not.

Showmax statement

“We recognise these movies are a product of their time and were created with positive intent. Showmax is an entertainment service and we don’t endorse the views or actions that take place in the shows and movies on our platform.

“It’s not our place to tell people what is right or wrong, nor what they should find offensive. But we will make decisions as to what content we are comfortable hosting,” the statement read.

“We believe that platforms such as ours have a role to play in bringing people together through shared experiences. We don’t want to shy away from polarising topics, but we also don’t want to sow division. We won’t always get the balance right, but we’ll do our best to listen and to learn from our mistakes.”

Leon Schuster responds

Channel24 reached out to Leon Schuster on Friday for comment who said he was relieved to see that Frank & Fearless would be available on the platform again.

About his other five films removed, Leon said: “There’s literally nothing I can do about it. The best thing I can do is come back with a fantastic new film.”

According to the South African filmmaker he’s currently busy working on the script for Mr Bones 3 with Alfred Ntombela and compares it to a Karate Kid type of story.

“It doesn’t help to moan or bad mouth anyone. When you fall hard you learn a lot. You get up and come back stronger,” Leon said over the phone.

Fake Jumia website claims to be giving away anniversary gifts

Jumia, one of Africa’s leading e-Commerce platforms, announced the celebration of its 8th anniversary with different promotions on its mobile application platform and website.

Following that announcement, two variations of a viral WhatsApp message claim that Jumia, is offering gifts in a daily spin-and-win promotion.

The messages urge recipients to visit a website or its alternative to participate in the promotion, which is part of Jumia’s 8th-anniversary celebration.

“JUMIA 8TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBTRATION: You Could Win Exciting Prizes in The Jumia 8th Anniversary Spin And Win giveaway. More and more people are winning daily, it could be your turn today. Hurry Now And Spin For Free. offer valid while stock last.

TERMS and CONDITIONS APPLIED. https://jumiawheel.store/?m=1,” one of the viral posts read.

When users click on the link, it leads them to a website with Jumia’s logo on the top left corner of the screen; meanwhile, the favicon of the website is the logo of Google Blogger platform.

It has a colourful image of a wheel of fortune with various items dotted around the board.

It also has many Facebook comments of supposed testimonies of winners of the prizes.

We sent an email to the PR and Communications Manager for Jumia Ghana, Bennet Otoo, to inquire about the information to which he responded saying “it’s a scam. Please ignore it. Not from Jumia.”

Dubawa also spoke to the Customer Care Representative at Jumia who confirmed that Jumia is celebrating its 8th anniversary. However, the representative clarified that Jumia is not offering any such promo of a Spin-and-Win giveaway. The representative stated that Jumia is rather offering discounts on certain products on its website.

“This is a scam and should you click on the link, you could give such people access to hack into your phone,” the representative cautioned.

We realized that both websites attempted to clone the original website by adopting their traditional orange and grey theme colour.

Both websites also embedded the same Facebook comments of people who claim they won prizes by participating in the promotion.

Our checks on Who is to know further details about the website domains showed that both websites were registered recently – one was registered on June 23, 2020, while the other was registered on June 29, 2020.

We further found that Jumia has also issued an official disclaimer about the scam on its Facebook page.

Another post, this time from a Facebook account also claims to be giving away free Vivo phones to users when they participate in a giveaway competition by typing the letters “VIVO” in the comment section and pressing send. The people with the fastest fingers would win brand new Vivo phones!

The motive, according to the post, is to,“… bless thousands of people”, thereby cautioning people who have already won prizes before from participating.

“WARNING: This prize is for people who have never won our prize before, please, if you have won an VIVO PHONE before, please stay away from this, let others also win.”

This post has been widely patronized by Facebook users resulting in 3,239 shares and 1.2K comments.

Dubawa spoke to Mr Jean Fidel Nyetam, the Local Representative for Vivo in Africa, and he stated that the company is not doing a giveaway on Facebook presently,

“It’s false. These are maybe scammers or something related to that.” Mr Nyetam said.

Mr Nyetam went on to state that people need to be cautious of fake posts and ploys online.

The Vivo newsroom website also makes no mention of a giveaway being done by the company. As a global tech company, it would be expected that that would be the first point of call to publish notice of a giveaway, if indeed such an event was in progress. This in itself is another red flag.

Furthermore, the Facebook account that posted “Viv0 givve away nyam” is riddled with typographical errors. The posts are not professionally written, with little or no detail given to customers about the company’s image. This would be self-sabotage if indeed Vivo posted the message. We see this as another red flag.

Most Vivo accounts on Facebook are verified like VivoIndia, Vivo.philippines and the main Vivoglobal Facebook page. The account in question, Viv0 givve away nyam, is not verified. It is neither followed by nor does it follow the Vivo global page.

Finally, none of the company’s other verified social media accounts like Vivo_global on Instagram, or Vivo_India on Twitter has published news of any giveaway being done by the company.

Conclusion

Neither Jumia nor Vivo is running a promotion. Citizens are advised to disregard such misinformation and are advised not to click on any associated link which may expose their phone or computer to scammers.

PM Modi meets soldiers injured in Galwan Valley clash, says they make 130 cr Indians proud

Home / India News / PM Modi meets soldiers injured in Galwan Valley clash, says they make 130 cr Indians proud

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met soldiers injured in the Galwan Valley clash with China and told them that 130 crore Indians were proud of their valour.

The prime minister visited the injured soldiers in hospital in Leh, soon after he addressed soldiers deployed in Ladakh.

“Our country has never bowed down and will never bow down to any world power, and I am able to say this because of braves like you,” PM Modi said while interacting with the soldiers, who were injured in the June 15 clash with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.

In a veiled reference to China, the PM said that the country will never bow to any other power in the world.

“I have come here to thank each one of you. Our India is self-reliant. Our country has never bowed down and will never bow down to any world power. I pay my respects to you as well as to the mothers who gave birth to braves like you. Hope everyone gets well soon,” he said.

Earlier in the day, addressing soldiers in Nimu, Prime Minister Modi, in an apparent swipe at China said the age of expansionism was over and added that the new age of development was the one nations should focus on.

“From Leh, Ladakh to Siachen and Kargil…and Galwan’s icy waters…every mountain, every peak is witness to the valour of Indian soldiers. Age of expansionism is over; this is the age of development. History has witnessed that expansionist forces have either lost or were forced to turn back,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that the people of Ladakh had rejected every attempt to create separatism in the region.

Praising the soldiers for their bravery on June 15, the Prime Minister said, “The braves who left us, they did not depart without reason, all of you gave a befitting reply. Your bravery, the blood you shed will inspire our youth and countrymen for generations.”

“You are in a hospital that’s why you may not know that 130 crore citizens are proud of you. A message has gone to the world about the valour shown by you bravehearts. The way you stood up to the powers, the world wishes to know who are these bravehearts? What is their training? What is their sacrifice? The world is analyzing your bravery. The blood you have shed is an inspiration to our country,” PM Modi said.

The India-China border situation continues to remain tense after 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives in a violent face-off in the Galwan Valley on June 15-16 when Chinese troops attempted to unilaterally change the status quo during the de-escalation. India and China have been involved in talks to ease the ongoing border tensions since last month.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister made a surprise visit to Ladakh and was briefed by senior officers at Nimu amid ongoing tensions with China. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane.

Worldwide Tofu Industry to 2025

Dublin, July 03, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “Tofu Market: Global Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2020-2025” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

The global tofu market grew at a CAGR of around 5% during 2014-2019. Tofu, or bean curd, refers to a creamy and protein-rich soy product that is made from curdling fresh soy milk and pressing it into a solid block. Unprocessed tofu is commonly available in a variety of textures, including extra-soft, soft, silken, firm and extra-firm.

It is widely used in multiple cuisines as it can effectively absorb flavors from spices, seasoning, sauces and marinades. It is a rich source of various nutrients and health-promoting compounds, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, amino acids and vitamin B1, which aid in improving heart and bone health and weight management.

The significant growth in the food and beverage industry, along with increasing consumer preferences for vegan food products, is among the key factors driving the growth of the market. In line with this, growing health consciousness and increasing instances of various lifestyle disorders have led to the widespread adoption of low-fat and low-cholesterol vegan and soy-based food products. Furthermore, the continual launch of innovative product variants, such as tofu-based sauces, burgers, hot dogs, ice creams, shakes and desserts, is acting as another growth-inducing factor. Restaurants, cafes and other eateries are experimenting with multiple flavors and combinations of tofu to offer innovative and unique dishes to their customers.

Additionally, the premiumization of gluten-free and low carb diets across the globe has also catalyzed the inclusion of organic tofu in the diets. Other factors, including aggressive promotional activities by manufacturers on social media platforms, the easy product availability through various e-commerce retail chains, rising consumer expenditure and rapid urbanization, are projected to drive the market further. Looking forward, the publisher expects the market to continue to exhibit moderate growth during the forecast period (2020-2025).
