Grimes is the No. 7 overall player and top-ranked cornerback in the country
Five-star cornerback Tony Grimes just announced his commitment to North Carolina
Five-star cornerback Tony Grimes, the No. 7 overall player in the Class of 2021, is the latest big addition to North Carolina’s highly rated class. The 6-foot, 180-pounder from Princess Anne High School chose the Tar Heels over Georgia, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Alabama.
Grimes, from Virginia Beach, Virginia, had 48 tackles and four interceptions as a junior last year, leading Princess Anne to an 8-3 record and playoff appearance. He also clocked a 4.20-second shuttle run and 33.8-inch vertical jump at a high school regional camp in April 2018.
“Mack Brown is an unbelievable head coach,” Grimes told CBS Sports HQ. “He came into UNC with players that he didn’t have, and he turned the football program around with players that he didn’t recruit. Now he has the players he recruited. I trust him, my family trusts him and we’re going to win the natty.”
Brian Dohn, national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, compares Grimes to Kyle Fuller of the Chicago Bears and provided this scouting report on his future at the collegiate level.
“Wide shoulders and good length. Frame of safety with cornerback skills. Instinctual player with high skill level. Physical and smooth. Tracks ball well and has great timing. Opens hips and runs with ease. Long strider who can cover on long crossing routes and deep throws. Strong upper body helps re-route receivers with jams. Comfortable in backpedal and explodes forward out of it. Good tackler and asset in run defense. High IQ on and off field. Leadership qualities. Must get stronger in lower body. Ready to play at elite program when he steps on campus. First round NFL draft pick potential.”
Grimes is the latest addition to what’s shaping up to be a stellar recruiting class for coach Mack Brown. He is the 17th commitment in the Tar Heels’ class of 2021, and the first five-star prospect. They also have 11, four-star players in the 247Sports Composite. They now rank No. 4 in the team recruiting rankings behind Ohio State, Clemson and Tennessee.
